January 1: Coeur d'Alene - Polar Bear Plunge For all that are brave enough to jump into the frigid waters of Lake Coeur d'Alene, this is your day! Welcome the New Year with a fast and furious plunge. 11:30am

January 1: Coeur d'Alene - Handicap Hangover Fun Run The race, a tradition for many families, raises money for TESH, a nonprofit organization that teaches life and job skills to people with disabilities. (208) 765-5105 or www.teshinc.com 

January 5: Coeur d'Alene - Eagle Watching Cruise Experience the American Bald Eagle up close with a cruise on Lake Coeur d'Alene aboard one of the fabulous cruise boats of The Lake Coeur d'Alene Fun Fleet. This is a two hour cruise around the north end of Lake Coeur d'Alene while observing the eagles. Bring your binoculars and dress warm. January 15-18: Sandpoint Winter Carnival The community celebrates the season with parades, parties and family events, sponsored by the Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce. The Taste of Sandpoint kicks off the carnival at the Cedar Street Bridge on Jan. 17, showcasing epicurean delights from some of the area's most excellent restaurants. The carnival's signature event takes place the following evening, when the Parade of Lights winds through downtown. Over the weekend, plenty of activities can be found around town, including the Adult Spelling Bee on Jan. 18 and Eichardt's K-9 Keg Pull on Jan. 20. Head up to the mountain Jan. 19-21 where Schweitzer puts on fireworks, live music, a torchlight parade and bonfires. See Schweitzer.com and SandpointChamber.org. 208-263-0887

January 16: Schweitzer Mountain Ski Resort - Shot in the Dark Rail Jam. The 2nd in a series of monthly rail jams. Shot in the Dark takes place under the night lights right in the heart of Schweitzer's village.  Each event has a unique feature designed by Spinney Bent Fabrication.  Prizes for top riders. January 17-18: Dover Bay, IDaho - Midwinter Art Fest 11am -5pm daily: With art from dozens of North Idaho Artists, this is our area's biggest winter art event. Featured at one of North Idaho's coolest waterfront communities, the Midwinter Art Fest is the biggest weekend deal during the Sandpoint Winter Carnival. Events, fun for the whole family, meet the aritsts, enjoy free beverages, refreshments, and treats, and see one of North Idaho's most beautiful resort communities. January 30: Sandpoint - Chamber Choice Awards. The Greater Sandpoint Chamber of Commerce presents the Chamber Choice Awards, a formal Oscar-style event to honor excellence in the Greater Sandpoint community. Happening at 5:30 p.m. at the Panida Theater, awards will be presented for Citizen of the Year and Business of the Year, among many other distinguished awards. January 31-Feb. 24: Sandpoint -  Sandpoint Mardi Gras Winter Carnival Celebration Sandpoint goes wild during this annual celebration, with outrageous events, contests and performances during a six-day partying spree with kick-off parties all throughout town.
